Ducks welcome Blue Jackets to Anaheim
Jan 8, 2012 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Anaheim Ducks will try to post consecutive victories for the first time since October when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Honda Center in tonight's clash between the Western Conference's bottom- two teams. The Ducks, who are one point ahead of Columbus for 14th place in the West, had lost three straight and seven of eight before posting Friday's victory over the visiting New York Islanders. Anaheim hasn't notched two wins in a row since a four-game winning streak from Oct. 8-17.
The Blue Jackets are also coming off a victory, as they recorded a 1-0 decision Saturday in Los Angeles. Columbus' only two-game win streak this year came on Nov. 19-21 with victories over Nashville and Calgary.
Anaheim, which is 8-12-1 as the host this year, is playing the fifth test of a six-game homestand tonight and finally earned its first win of the residency Friday against the Isles. Bobby Ryan scored twice as the Ducks notched a 4-2 win over New York. Ryan has recorded five goals over his last five games and has 15 markers on the season, tying him with Corey Perry for the team lead.
Teemu Selanne scored the 649th goal of his career and with his next tally will become the 13th player in NHL history to reach the 650 mark. Philadelphia's Jaromir Jagr reached the milestone earlier this season and is at 658 goals for his career.
Ryan Getzlaf also lit the lamp for the Ducks, while Jonas Hiller gave up two goals on 21 shots in the win.
"We got mad instead of hanging our heads when we got behind," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau. "The big guys got mad and it showed."
The Ducks are now 4-9-2 since Boudreau took over as head coach for the fired Randy Carlyle.
One of Columbus' 11 wins this year came against the Ducks, as the Blue Jackets defeated a visiting Anaheim club by a 3-1 score on Oct. 30. The Blue Jackets have taken four of six and six of the last nine meetings in this series, but the clubs have split the last eight matchups in Anaheim.
The Blue Jackets shut down the Kings on Saturday, as Curtis Sanford made 31 saves to record his first shutout of the season in his club's 1-0 decision at the Staples Center.
Sanford stopped 14 shots in the third period, during which the Kings had multiple power plays.
"[Sanford] played outstanding, made the big saves," said Columbus head coach Scott Arniel. "But I have got to give a lot of credit to our team. We blocked a lot of shots. Penalty kill did an outstanding job."
Grant Clitsome scored the game's only goal for Columbus at 11:25 of the second period.
The Blue Jackets are playing the third test of a four-game road trip tonight. They are 5-13-2 as the guest this year and will close the swing Tuesday in Chicago.
