Red Wings win in OT; Blackhawks lose 4th straight
Jan 9, 2012 - 5:57 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Pavel Datsyuk netted a shorthanded game-winner with 1:52 left in overtime, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. On the game-winner, Corey Crawford made two initial saves on shots by Datsyuk in the slot and Jonathan Ericsson's backhanded attempt on the rebound, but Crawford was unable to cover the puck with his glove.
From an extremely tight angle right of the net, Datsyuk whiffed on his first attempt, but composed himself and lifted his next shot over the pads of Crawford, who was down in the crease.
Valtterri Filppula and Danny Cleary also tallied for Detroit, which moved into a first-place tie with Chicago and St. Louis atop the Western Conference's Central Division. The Red Wings have won four of their last six games.
Ty Conklin made 29 saves -- including a Jimmy Hayes penalty shot in the third period -- for the win.
"This is a big step for Conks (Conklin) here personally, for himself," Red Wings head coach said.
Dave Bolland and Patrick Sharp netted goals for the Blackhawks, who have dropped a season-high four consecutive games. Crawford stopped 24-of-27 shots.
"I don't think its something we nee to get overly down on ourselves about, we got to just stay positive," Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith said of Chicago's four-game losing streak.
After a scoreless second period, the Blackhawks took a 2-1 advantage into the third.
Chicago was rewarded with a penalty shot at the 7:53 mark as Tomas Holmstrom covered the puck in the crease. But Conklin stoned Hayes on his penalty shot attempt.
The Red Wings tied the game with 4:45 remaining in regulation. Henrik Zetterberg spun around and took a shot from the left circle. The disc squirted through the legs of Crawford and Cleary poked it home.
Bolland and Sharp netted a pair of tallies in a 44-second span in the first period to give Chicago a 2-0 advantage at the 4:19 mark.
Filppula got Detroit on the board on the man advantage with 6:31 remaining in the opening period.
