Canucks win in SO, hand Lightning fourth straight loss
Jan 11, 2012 - 4:12 AM Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Mason Raymond scored in the second round of the shootout, lifting the Vancouver Canucks over the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-4.Alexander Edler, Jannik Hansen, Manny Malhotra and Ryan Kesler lit the lamp for the Canucks, who have won three of four.
Cory Schneider made 27 saves for the victors.
Steven Stamkos, Ryan Malone and Vincent Lecavalier all had a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who have lost four in a row.
Dwayne Roloson stopped 24-of-28 shots.
Down by two, 4-2, Tampa Bay scored twice in the third period to tie the game. Steve Downie jammed home a rebound off a Pavel Kubina shot to make it a one- goal game at the 6:14 mark.
With just 1:01 to play, Malone lit the lamp. Martin St Louis carried the puck down the right wing before throwing the puck in front. The disc deflected off Malone's skate and into the back of the net.
Malone hit the crossbar on a shot with 55 seconds left in overtime.
Raymond was the first to score in the shootout. He made a spin move in front of Roloson before putting a backhander into the back of the net. Schneider stopped Stamkos to secure the victory.
The Canucks took a 1-0 lead on Edler's blast from the point at the 2:36 mark of the first period.
Hansen added a short-handed goal at the 8:16 mark. Dan Hamhuis' shot set up a rebound at the left circle for Hansen.
Stamkos' tip-in got Tampa Bay on the board at the 10:12 mark of the middle stanza.
But Malhotra made it a two-goal game again just over two minutes later.
The Lightning got the goal back with 31.6 seconds to go. Stamkos was stopped by Schneider on a breakaway, but Lecavalier was there to jam home the rebound.
Kesler gave Vancouver a 4-2 edge with just 1.4 seconds left.
Game Notes
The Canucks own 16 wins in their 24 all-time meetings with Tampa Bay... The Lightning are on their longest skid since a five-game slide from November 28-December 6...The Canucks were without defenseman Sami Salo (concussion).
