Flames start hot, take down Devils

Jan 11, 2012 - 5:56 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Curtis Glencross had a goal and three assists as the Calgary Flames used a first period blitz to take a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists while Jay Bouwmeester added a goal and an assist for the Flames, who have won their past two. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 35 shots in the win.

Adam Henrique and Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist apiece for the Devils, who came into the game having won four of six.

Martin Brodeur started the game, but was pulled 7:32 in after giving up two goals on five shots. Johan Hedberg was touched for four goals on nine shots the rest of the way.

Bouwmeester scored just 5:54 in as his shot from the right point beat Broduer cleanly and less than two minutes later, Cory Sarich made it a 2-0 game with a slap shot from the top of the right circle.

Glencross made it a 3-0 game at 13:12 when he put in a feed from Olli Jokinen down low to the left and a power-play goal from T.J. Brodie at the 16:38 mark of the first gave his team a 4-0 lead.

Kovalchuk scored off a rebound with 5:12 to play in the second to get the Devils on the board, but Lee Stempniak got it back less than two minutes later with a wrister from the slot.

Henrique scored on a 2-on-1 shorthanded break with Zach Parise with 2:36 to play in the second and the Devils made it a 5-3 game on the power play 6:04 into the third on Patrik Elias' one-timer from the right circle.

Iginla, though, scored goal No. 501 of his career on a snap shot of a loose puck in the slot just under three minutes later.

Calgary hosts Anaheim on Thursday...The Devils play in Edmonton on Wednesday...New Jersey had won three of four against Calgary coming into the contest...The Devils were 1-for-4 on the power play while the Flames went 1- for-5.
