Anderson blanks Rangers, keeps Senators streaking

Jan 13, 2012 - 5:36 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Craig Anderson turned aside 34 shots for his first shutout of the season to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Jason Spezza scored twice while Milan Michalek also had a goal for the Senators, who have won three straight and seven of eight.

"It was a good game we had tonight," said Spezza. "They're one of the best teams in the league, and to shut them down like we did tonight is huge for us."

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 21 shots for the Rangers, who had a five-game winning streak stopped.

"We had chances to score, but I thought Anderson played really well," said New York head coach John Tortorella. "I just think we didn't get enough out of our top guys."

The game was scoreless until the second period when Spezza gave his team a 1-0 lead as his wrister from the circle beat Lundqvist at the 8:54 mark.

Anderson stopped 24 shots over the first two periods and got an insurance goal at the 13:58 mark of the third when Erik Karlsson sent a pass from the left point to the slot where Michalek shot it over the glove of Lundqvist.

Spezza's 18th of the year came on the power play with 4:27 to play. His initial shot from the left circle was stopped, but the puck sat between the pads of Lundqvist, who didn't spot the puck, and the slick winger followed up and jammed it home.

Ottawa plays at Montreal on Saturday...New York plays the next two games on the road starting Saturday in Toronto...Anderson has 17 shutouts in his career...Ottawa was 1-for-2 on the power play while New York went 0- for-4...The Senators have taken both games against the Rangers in New York this season, while the Rangers won a game in Ottawa.
