Red Wings earn shootout win over Coyotes
Jan 13, 2012 - 7:57 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg scored the winner in the shootout and Jimmy Howard posted the 100th win of his career as Detroit continued its home win streak with a 3-2 win over Phoenix. In the fourth round, Zetterberg skated in on net and slowed down to fake to the backhand. As he was going to the left of Mike Smith, he reached out with his right hand on the stick and tapped the puck in.
Howard then stopped Lauri Korpikoski to give the Red Wings their 13th straight home win, one shy of the team record.
Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen each had a goal while Howard made 25 stops for the Red Wings, who have taken both games against Phoenix this season.
"We pay a lot more attention to detail when we're out there," said Howard. "We keep it simple and try not to give up too many odd-man rushes. Just sticking to the game plan and that's a big reason we've been so successful at home."
Radim Vrbata and Taylor Pyatt scored for the Coyotes, who have lost four of their last five. Smith stopped 40 shots.
"We need two points in the standings every game we have from now on," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "I thought we had a good effort out there tonight and it's ashame we didn't get the two points."
The first goal of the game went to Phoenix as Vrbata's wrister from the left circle sailed past Howard halfway through the first.
Detroit, though, tied the game in the final minute of the first period as Filppula's blast from the high slot beat Smith.
The Coyotes took a 2-1 lead 3:02 into the third when a charge to the net saw Pyatt get his stick on the puck for his sixth of the year.
The Red Wings tied the game halfway through the final frame as Pavel Datsyuk sent a saucer pass from the right boards over to the low left side where Franzen cut in for the backdoor tip-in for his 17th of the year.
