Flyers try for rare victory in Nashville

Jan 14, 2012 - 5:07 PM (Sports Network) - The Flyers have been on a roll since their disappointing loss in the Winter Classic. They hope that momentum can net them their first victory in Nashville in nearly 12 years.

Philadelphia visits the Predators tonight looking to win a third straight game and snap Nashville's current run of victories at three in a row.

The Flyers have won four of five since their outdoor loss to the Rangers on Jan. 2, with Thursday's 3-2 win over the Islanders putting them two points back of the Blueshirts for first place in both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia closed the gap by beating the New York Islanders for an eighth straight time and for the 26th time in the past 28 meetings. Sean Couturier scored the game-winner late in regulation, his third game in a row with a goal, and backup Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves.

"He looked sharp, I thought, throughout the entire game," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette of his goaltender, who has shaken off a Winter Classic loss with back-to-back wins on the road. "The second period wasn't good for us, we stopped shooting the puck and gave up too much and he was solid for us."

Scott Hartnell posted his team-leading 19th goal, Wayne Simmonds scored and Claude Giroux snapped a three-game point drought with an assist. He is tied for second in the league with 49 points.

Philadelphia concludes a three-game road trip tonight and is 16-6-2 as the guest. The club hopes that success on the road can land its first victory in Nashville since March 21, 2000. The Flyers are 0-0-2 with a pair of ties in four trips since, dropping back-to-back shootouts at Bridgestone Arena.

Philly won at home over Nashville in the lone meeting last year.

Nashville pushed its winning streak to three in a row with a home-and-home sweep of Colorado. After scoring three times in the first period to notch a 4-1 win at Denver on Tuesday, the Predators rallied from a two-goal first- period deficit at home two nights later to notch a 3-2 overtime win.

David Legwand scored twice, including once off his own rebound 34 seconds into overtime, and is tied for the team lead with 12 goals, while Sergei Kostitysyn netted the other tally. Pekka Rinne made 27 saves in Nashville's sixth win in seven games.

"We got a big win in Denver, then got a nice win coming back here," Rinne said. "So we were able to create a bit of separation between us and them."

The Predators notched their ninth victory in their past 11 games at home.
