Red Wings match team record with OT win

Jan 14, 2012 - 10:04 PM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Detroit matched the longest home winning streak in team history but required overtime to do so.

Todd Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game with 39 seconds to go in the extra session, as the Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2.

Detroit notched its 14th straight victory at Joe Louis Arena, equaling the franchise record set from January 21-March 25, 1965 at the Olympia.

The Blackhawks looked to be a prime candidate to end the streak because they had won five straight games in Motown and tied the game on a goal by Jonathan Toews with goaltender Corey Crawford on the bench and 51.7 seconds remaining in the third period.

After a clean faceoff win, Toews moved to the net and got a piece of Marian Hossa's slap shot that initially deflected off the right skate of Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.

"We didn't get discouraged by [the game-tying goal] and I really felt we came out hard in overtime," Lidstrom said.

Detroit registered all nine shots in overtime, the last one by Bertuzzi, who buried a rebound from the slot.

Jimmy Howard made 25 saves -- 15 in the third period -- to earn his NHL- leading 26th win of the season.

The Red Wings improved to 17-2-1 this season at home and haven't lost as the host since November 3 against Calgary.

Crawford stopped 40 shots for Chicago, which has dropped five of seven.

Considering it was outshot 21-4 in the opening 20 minutes, Chicago was fortunate to be down only 2-0.

Marcus Kruger (concussion), who was activated from injured reserve Friday, committed a restraining foul, and Detroit scored on the subsequent power play.

Pavel Datsyuk fed Ian White for a one-timer at the point and Tomas Holmstrom redirected the puck in front of the net at 12:56.

Bertuzzi then gathered a stretch pass from Datsyuk and beat Crawford with a backhander to the glove side on a breakaway at 16:10. Bertuzzi missed the Red Wings' previous game with a lower-body injury.

The Blackhawks got on the board in the second period, getting an unlikely assist from Howard. The Detroit goaltender failed in his attempt to position the puck for his defenseman behind his own net and the miscue led to rookie Andrew Shaw hitting a yawning cage with 5:06 remaining.

Shaw was on the wrong end of a high stick that resulted in a double-minor penalty being assessed to Detroit's Drew Miller in the third period. Miller was denied on a breakaway after exiting the box.

"[The Red Wings] came out really strong but I thought we settled down," Crawford said. "We got some chances and [Howard] made some big saves."
