Stastny helps Avs edge Stars

Jan 15, 2012 - 1:27 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Paul Stastny scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 21 saves and the Colorado Avalanche edged the Dallas Stars, 2-1, at American Airlines Center.

Stastny, who also set up a first-period tally by David Jones, lit the lamp 13 seconds into a power play at the 10:35 mark.

"We're finding ways to get points, especially on the road, against another playoff contender, a playoff team like Dallas, these are the teams you battle for," Stastny said. "To find a way to get two points and not let them bring it to overtime, it's very important."

Dallas closed the out game on a power play when Daniel Winnik clipped Sheldon Souray with a high stick, but couldn't produce an equalizer with goalie Kari Lehtonen on the bench.

The Avalanche snapped a 0-2-1 skid and improved to 16-5-2 in one-goal games this season, the most such victories in the NHL.

Lehtonen stopped 21 shots for Dallas, which has dropped two of three.

"We didn't have our best stuff today," Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. "We were still in a position to find some points and that's the next step."

Colorado opened the scoring 10:25 into the game when Jones sent a backhander past Lehtonen, who had turned the puck over to Stastny behind the Dallas net.

The Stars tied the game on a wraparound goal by Vernon Fiddler 5:26 into the third period.

Stastny put the visitors back in front at 10:35, tipping Erik Johnson's shot from the sideboards between the legs of Lehtonen.
