Alfredsson's shootout winner lifts Sens over Canadiens
Jan 15, 2012 - 6:45 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Daniel Alfredsson scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 decision over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.Alfredsson -- who's now 4-for-4 in the shootout this season -- patiently waited for Carey Price to open up the five-hole and in a blink, snapped a wrister between his legs for the win.
"I tried to fake a shot and thought he'd wait for me," Alfredsson said. "I was able to find a little bit of an opening."
Craig Anderson stopped all three shots in the shootout and made 33 saves for the Senators, who won their fourth straight game. They have gone nine straight games without a regulation loss, posting a 8-0-1 mark during that span.
Jason Spezza and Kyle Turris tallied in regulation for Ottawa.
Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty netted goals for Montreal, which got 23 saves from Price.
"We missed two points tonight," Plekanec said "It's disappointing because overall we did better. After our first goal we stopped playing a bit and they pushed us back. We have a tough time in shootouts, we just have to find a way somehow."
Pacioretty tied the game and sent it to overtime with 39 seconds left in regulation. Chris Campoli took a slap shot from the left point, and Pacioretty backhanded the rebounded into the back of the net.
Anderson made 21 saves while Price stopped 13 shots to keep the game scoreless after two periods of play.
Plekanec netted a short-handed breakaway goal 42 seconds into the third period for the game's first tally.
But the Senators tied the game at 5:57 as Turris tipped home a right-point wrister from Sergei Gonchar.
Spezza put the Senators in front on the power play with 6:18 remaining as his laser from the top of the right circle got past Price.
