Quick strong in net as Kings top Flames

Jan 15, 2012 - 6:39 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Mike Richards and Dustin Brown finished with a goal and an assist apiece as the Los Angeles Kings topped the Calgary Flames, 4-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Matt Greene and Anze Kopitar also found the back of the net for the Kings, who rebounded from a 5-4 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Jonathan Quick made 29 saves.

"I thought we were pretty sluggish in the first period," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said. "But we played really well in the second period and our power play came up with a huge goal."

Mike Cammalleri netted the only goal for Calgary in his first game with the Flames since being dealt from Montreal in exchange for forward Rene Bourque on Thursday. Miikka Kiprusoff was touched for three goals on 23 shots.

After a scoreless first period, Los Angeles took control of the game in the second period, netting three consecutive goals.

The first goal of the period came just 27 seconds in when Richards took advantage of a careless play by Flames defenseman Mark Giordano.

Los Angeles sent the puck harmlessly out to the neutral zone, where Giordano was back to retrieve, but the puck hopped over his stick and Richards went in on a breakaway and easily beat Kiprusoff to give the Kings the 1-0 lead.

The Kings made it 2-0 at 3:07 when Greene accepted a pass at the right point from Jarret Stoll and let a wrister go that got through bodies in front and past Kiprusoff.

Los Angeles expanded its lead at 14:48 on the power play when Brown fired a shot from the left point that hit the skate of Flames defenseman Chris Butler, but Kopitar was there to stuff home the loose puck from in front.

Calgary finally answered with a goal on the power play at 15:52 when Cammalleri deflected home a point shot by Anton Babchuk, but it was too little, too late as Brown added an empty-netter with 57 seconds left in regulation to seal the outcome.

"I thought that our first period was as good a first period as we probably played all year," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said. "They don't give you a whole lot, but when they have mistakes happen, Quick is obviously an outstanding goalie."
