Doan, Gordon lead Coyotes past Avs
Jan 17, 2012 - 2:14 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Shane Doan and Boyd Gordon scored a pair of goals and Mike Smith made 38 saves as Phoenix dominated Colorado by a 6-1 count on Monday.Gilbert Brule and Rostislav Klesla also lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who put the brakes on a three-game slide.
"It doesn't happen very often and it's great to see that different people can contribute when we're winning," Gordon said of his rare burst of offense. "This was definitely a big win for us. Mike played well and made some big saves for us. We have a couple big games coming up here."
Chuck Kobasew tallied in the first period for the Avalanche, who have lost four of five.
Semyon Varlamov was tagged in defeat for six goals on 33 shots.
Doan deflected in a Chris Summers blast just after the midway point of the second, then Gordon accepted a Ray Whitney feed and lifted a shot under the crossbar from the right wing for a 4-1 game with just over three minutes left.
Gordon made it 5-1 for Phoenix at 5:31 of the third period, when his third- chance stab at his own wraparound at the right post got through Varlamov's pad.
Klesla provided the final margin as the clock ticked down near four minutes left in regulation.
Brule's power-play score -- a one-timer from the left circle off a Keith Yandle pass at 7:18 of the opening period -- gave the hosts the lead.
Kobasew evened things at 9:36, when he faced away from Smith but still redirected an Erik Johnson blast.
Doan then cruised through the Colorado zone thanks to a lead pass by Yandle and stuck a shot home from in close with 1:28 to play in the first.
"When you go through a whole game when the other teams plays a perfect game it's something to be said for how they play," said Avalanche head coach Joe Sacco on the Coyotes' dominating performance which didn't allow Colorado a single power play.
