Mason, Jets top Senators to stop skid

Jan 17, 2012 - 5:43 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Chris Mason made 25 saves for his second shutout of the season and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Ottawa Senators, 2-0, on Monday to stop a three-game losing streak.

Mason's 23rd career shutout also halted a four-game winning streak for the Senators, who had gone unbeaten in regulation in their previous nine games overall (8-0-1).

"We caught a few breaks here and that's fortunate because we needed this win tonight," said Mason. "A little luck and the guys playing good in front of me made the difference."

Jim Slater scored 49 seconds into the game for the only goal Winnipeg would need and Tobias Enstrom added a tally in the second period.

Craig Anderson took the loss, giving up two goals on 35 shots for Ottawa.

"We didn't bring our best, but I think we gave ourselves the opportunity to win," said Anderson.

He faced a 3-on-2 for Winnipeg in the first minute of the game and couldn't stop Slater's strong tip-in from the slot on a pass delivered from the right side by Chris Thorburn.

Mason only needed to make three saves in the first period, then eight in the second to keep the Senators off the board.

Enstrom made it 2-0 with a slap shot from the top of the left circle that he rifled past Mason at 6:48. Kyle Wellwood and Andrew Ladd drew assists on the goal.

Mason had 14 saves in the third period and spoiled Ottawa's only home game for a while.

The Senators were coming off a three-game road trip and are headed out for six more games on the road. Prior to Monday, they had been 11-1-2 in their last 14 games overall.

Game Notes

Boston beat Florida in a shootout Monday and moved three points ahead of Ottawa for first place in the Northeast Division...The Jets were 0-for-3 on the power play and the Senators went 0-for-2.
