Islanders earn rare win over Philadelphia

Jan 20, 2012 - 3:36 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Evgeni Nabokov made 40 saves to give the New York Islanders a rare victory over the Philadelphia Flyers with a 4-1 win at Wells Fargo Center.

Michael Grabner, Mark Streit, Josh Bailey and Matt Moulson all scored for the Islanders, who defeated the Flyers for just the third time in the past 29 matchups and won in Philly for the first time since April 7, 2007.

"Yeah, it was a good feeling. We haven't had much success here," said Islanders head coach Jack Capuano. "We played hard. They came in the third and they came in waves. I thought Evgeni Nabokov was real good."

Matt Read scored the lone goal of the game for the Flyers, who had won three of four coming in. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed three goals on 26 shots in the loss.

"There are no easy wins in the NHL, you have to come ready to play every night," said Read. "They're a good team over there and are fighting for wins, just like the rest of us."

The Islanders appeared to get on the board just under seven minutes into the first as a wraparound from John Tavares slid off his stick and Moulson was able to put the puck in. A replay, though, showed that Moulson kicked the puck in and the on-ice called was waived off.

Those same two players did hook up for a goal just 28 seconds into the middle period. Tavares skated in down the right wing and worked the puck down low before sending a blind pass to the slot. The puck went past one Islander, but wound up on the stick of Moulson, who buried his wrister for his 22nd of the year.

Bobrovsky stopped several breakaways in the second period, but Bailey was able to get one by him. Skating shorthanded, Matt Martin forced a turnover at the left point and got the puck to Bailey, who lifted a backhander in on a clean break for a 2-0 lead with 7:02 left in the second.

Nabokov was busy in the second period as he stopped all 17 shots sent his way and helped his team kill off three power plays.

Skating on the power play, the Islanders took a 3-0 lead on Streit's one-timer from the right circle at the 7:07 mark of the third.

Philly showed some life as the team got on the board less than four minutes later when Sean Couturier fired a shot from the left circle that Read deflected in.

The Flyers, though, were unable to get closer and Grabner scored into the empty net in the final second.
