20! Red Wings tie home winning streak mark

Feb 13, 2012 - 5:30 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The last time the Detroit Red Wings lost a home game, the Lions were 6-2 and the Pistons were stuck in a lockout with the rest of the NBA.

What a record-tying streak it's been.

Johan Franzen scored 52 seconds into the third period to break a tie and the Red Wings held on for their 20th straight home win, edging the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Sunday night.

Niklas Kronwall, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for the Red Wings, who bounced back from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 and matched the NHL mark set by Boston in 1929-30 and matched by Philadelphia in 1975-76.

"It's been something special. Looking back, we've had some great teams over the last 20 years, but none that have been close to this record," said Nicklas Lidstrom, who played his 1,550th game -- all with Detroit. "So we should take a lot of pride in it."

Joey MacDonald had 26 saves in the latest victory, including 10 in the third period to keep the Flyers off the board.

Brayden Schenn had two goals, including one after a MacDonald turnover, and Max Talbot also scored for the Flyers. Sergei Bobrovsky gave up four goals on 25 shots.

Philadelphia, despite winning two in a row over the Red Wings entering Sunday, has just one victory in its last 17 regular season games in Detroit.

"We have to find ways to win [close] games," said Schenn.

The Red Wings haven't lost at Joe Louis Arena since a 4-1 setback to Calgary on November 3. The streak reached 19 games in a shootout win over Anaheim on Friday, the fourth time during the run that a game went past regulation and third time that it ended in a shootout.

Sunday's game was tight, too, but the Red Wings moved to 3-0 on their current six-game homestand after some deft passing early in the third period by two of their leaders. They can break the record Tuesday against Dallas.

Franzen's game-winner was set up by Lidstrom and Zetterberg.

Lidstrom started the play, slipping a pass from the point down to Zetterberg on the left side. Zetterberg re-directed it in front, and Franzen was waiting there to hammer it in.

Bobrovsky, playing his third straight game as Ilya Bryzgalov battles flu-like symptoms, just couldn't shift quickly enough to stop it.

Valtteri Filppula nearly gave the Red Wings a two-goal lead moments later, but he flipped a shot over the cross bar.

"It's been a little anxious the last few games," said Zetterberg. "We've been close, so it was nice to [tie the record] and now we just got to break it."

The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead on the power play when Kronwall blasted a slap shot from the point through Todd Bertuzzi's screen 7:08 into the game, but the Red Wings had to play catch-up twice after that.

The Flyers tied it with 3:18 remaining in the period after MacDonald, trying to clear the puck, instead passed it right to Danny Briere low on the right side. Briere slipped a pass into the slot for Schenn, who scored into an empty net.

After the Flyers dodged a wraparound try by Darren Helm -- he slid the puck through the crease and between Bobrovsky's legs from the back side, sending it back into the slot -- Schenn made it 2-1 on a rebound goal early in the second period.

Philadelphia won a faceoff and Braydon Coburn's initial shot from the point was turned aside, but Schenn was there for the long rebound below the left circle to score from a sharp angle.

Detroit got its second power play goal of the game with Wayne Simmonds off for slashing. The puck was fired around the end boards to Franzen on the left side, and he tapped a pass to Datsyuk for a snap shot that beat Bobrovsky from the low left circle.

Matt Read hustled to set up Talbot's goal for a 3-2 lead, chasing the puck down at the left boards and sending a pass into the slot for Scott Hartnell, who tipped it down low for Talbot on the left side.

The Red Wings, who had 13 shots in the second period, tied it with 99 seconds left when Zetterberg's one-timer from high on the left side knuckled through Bobrovsky.

Game Notes

The Flyers will host the Red Wings on March 6. They were coming off their seventh straight loss to the New York Rangers and are returning home for games against Buffalo and Pittsburgh later this week...Flyers forward Jakub Voracek didn't play and is day-to-day with an upper body injury.
