Ducks stay hot, down Penguins
Feb 16, 2012 - 4:11 AM Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne scored a tiebreaking goal in the third period and Jonas Hiller turned away 25 Penguins shots, backstopping the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 victory, their first in Pittsburgh in more than a decade.Corey Perry supplied the other goal for Anaheim, which improved to 5-0-2 in its last seven, including 3-0-1 on a season-high eight-game road trip.
Not only did the Ducks record their first win in the Steel City since October 6, 2001, snapping a four-game drought, they silenced the league's hottest player, Evgeni Malkin.
The Pittsburgh center had totaled five goals and five assists over a five-game point streak and lit the lamp in eight straight home games.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves for the Penguins, who were looking for their seventh consecutive win at CONSOL Energy Center.
"There was definitely opportunities where we could have made better plays to bury the team," Pittsburgh forward Jordan Staal said.
Perry erased a 1-0 deficit with his fifth tally in three games. He came out of the left corner, dangled the puck around Pittsburgh defenseman Zbynek Michalek and beat Fleury along the ice with 52 seconds remaining in the second period.
Selanne put the visitors in front at the 7:51 mark of the third. The veteran Finn accepted Matt Beleskey's pass in stride as he glided down the left wing and whipped a backhander past Fleury.
It was Selanne's 656th career goal, tying him with Brendan Shanahan for 12th all-time.
"This team is playing with a lot of confidence right now," Selanne said.
Staal opened the scoring 6:27 into the game. A Ducks defenseman tried to keep the puck in the offensive zone, but Pascal Dupuis swept the puck ahead to Staal, creating a 2-on-1 with Matt Cooke. Staal faked a pass and fired a high shot past Hiller.
