Final
Lundqvist, Rangers blank Devils
Feb 28, 2012 - 5:11 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist ended his February the same way he began it, with a shutout.Lundqvist stopped 13 shots for his NHL-leading eighth shutout of the season to help the New York Rangers take a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers' netminder finished a fantastic month in which he went 8-2-0. He posted three shutouts during the month and gave up two goals or less in every appearance.
He also won his 30th game of the season and has won at least 30 games in all seven of his campaigns in the NHL.
Carl Hagelin's goal in the first period accounted for the game-winner as the Rangers won their second straight game to increase their lead in the conference and division to nine points.
"That was the type of game you expect to see when you have two great teams with two great goalies," said Hagelin. "It's always tight when we play them and you saw that today with the small amount of shots."
Martin Brodeur was the hard-luck loser as he gave up just one goal on 14 shots for the Devils, who have dropped their past three games.
"We just have to keep working hard on the road," said Brodeur. "We have some tough games coming up, but we've been playing well on the road so we just have to keep it up."
Late in the first period, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead when Ryan Callahan sent a short pass from behind the net to the low left side where Hagelin shoveled it in with 3:01 left.
The score stayed that way through the second period as each goaltender made six saves in the frame.
Lundqvist held the shutout with 2:26 to play in the third when he made a glove save on an Ilya Kovalchuk wrister from the left circle.
Callahan sealed the win when he scored into the empty net off a feed from Hagelin, whose hard skating had earned a delayed penalty call to New Jersey.
