Blues take down lifeless Flames

Feb 28, 2012 - 5:22 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jason Arnott backed Jaroslav Halak's 20 saves with a pair of goals, as the Blues downed the Flames, 3-1, on Monday.

David Backes also scored and Patrik Berglund added a pair of assists for the Blues, who moved into a tie with the Red Wings atop the Central Division. They have won three straight to begin a six-game road trip.

Curtis Glencross scored the lone goal for the Flames, who got 21 saves from Miikka Kiprusoff. They completed a winless four-game homestand and have dropped five of six overall.

The Flames took a 1-0 lead just 5:11 into the first courtesy of Glencross' wrister from between the circles, but the Blues closed the game with three unanswered tallies.

Backes tied it later in the opening period. He sent a wrist shot on net while moving up the right boards and Kiprusoff provided little resistance, allowing the puck to trickle past at the 14:13 mark.

Arnott sealed the win with a pair of power play goals.

His initial tally -- a slap shot from the left circle -- came just 40 seconds before the first intermission. He struck again 6:21 into the second, driving home a rebound after Berglund's tip-shot bounced off Kiprusoff.

Halak turned aside 10 shots in a scoreless third.

Game Notes

The Blues and Red Wings both have 85 points...This was the fourth and final matchup of the season between the teams. St. Louis won three of four...Berglund has seven assists in his last seven games...The Flames signed forward Tim Jackman to a two-year contract extension on Monday. The average annual value of the deal is $612,500.
