Ducks look to put Senators in two-game hole
May 30, 2007 - 1:23 PM Ottawa at Anaheim 8:00 pm EDT Stanley Cup Finals Anaheim leads, 1-0ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Ducks beat the Ottawa Senators in more ways than one Sunday.
The Ducks' physical play against the vaunted Senators' offense translated into a 3-2 win in the opener of the Stanley Cup Finals and moved Anaheim a step closer to its first championship in franchise history.
The Ducks will look to go up two-games-to-none on Wednesday, before traveling across North America to play Games Three and Four in Ottawa.
Anaheim took seven penalties on Monday - which resulted in two power-play goals for Ottawa - but the Ducks' hard-hitting intimidating-style of play seemed to be by design, and it worked.
The Ducks successfully contained the potent trio of Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley, who had combined for 58 points over 15 playoff games en route to the finals.
Alfredsson and Spezza were held to one assist each, while Heatley - who scored 50 goals in the regular season - was kept off the scoresheet. Spezza's assist was his 21st point of the playoffs, tying him with Heatley for the scoring lead.
The Ducks didn't exactly coast to victory, as they trailed 2-1 after two periods. However, Ryan Getzlaf tallied at 5:44 of the third and Rob Niedermayer netted the game-winner with just 2:51 remaining in regulation.
Ottawa's two power-play goals snapped an 0-for-16 drought with the man advantage dating back to the Eastern Conference finals against Buffalo. Over the entire playoffs, the Senators have recorded 16 power-play tallies in 77 opportunities, including an NHL-leading 12-for-39 mark (30.8 percent) on the road.
Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 18 saves in the win for Anaheim while counterpart Ray Emery stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced.
It appears the key for the Ducks in these playoffs is scoring more than once - the team is 13-0 this postseason when they score two or more goals.
