Red Wings try to solve road woes in Music City

Mar 10, 2012 - 4:14 PM (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings try to reverse their miserable play on the road this evening when they open a four-game road trip against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena.

The Red Wings snapped a two-game losing streak on Friday, as Darren Helm scored the game-winner with 1:13 to play, lifting Detroit to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena.

Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and an assist while Valtteri Filppula added a goal and two assists for the Red Wings, who moved within two points of the St. Louis Blues for the top spot in the NHL. Joey MacDonald stopped 21 shots in the win.

"They played us tough and didn't give us much all night," said Zetterberg. "But we found a way to get some goals in the third and it was a hard-fought two points."

Their three-point nights gave Zetterberg 12 points over the past six games, and Filppula 11.

A big reason the Red Wings are still chasing the Blues in the Central Division has been their play on the road, where they have lost four of five and are a mere 16-17-1 on the season. In fact, Detroit has only two regulation victories in its last 11 road games, winning three times in shootouts during that stretch.

Injuries have also played a part in Detroit's recent poor play, as the team has been without captain Nicklas Lidstrom, leading scorer Pavel Datsyuk, No. 1 goaltender Jimmy Howard and forward Todd Bertuzzi.

Nashville, meanwhile, also enters on a winning note following netminder Pekka Rinne's league-leading 37th win of the season on Thursday over Colorado. Sergei Kostitsyn's goal near the end of the second period was the eventual game-winner as the Predators skated past the Avalanche, 4-2.

Mike Fisher and Brandon Yip also scored for the Predators, who bounced back from a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Rinne made 15 saves in the victory.

"I think we had a much better effort," Predators head coach Barry Trotz said. "We wanted to get off to a good start. They scored right away, but I thought we responded really well, and the rest of the period we were really good."

Rinne, though, is just 1-3-0 with a 3.25 goals against average this season versus the Red Wings.

The Predators remain entrenched in the fifth spot in the Western Conference with 85 points, six behind Detroit for fourth place and four in front of sixth-seeded Chicago.

Detroit has beaten the Preds in three of the four meetings between the two this season.
