Sedin scores twice as Canucks edge Blue Jackets
Mar 18, 2012 - 5:51 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Daniel Sedin scored twice as the Vancouver Canucks edged the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-3, at Rogers Arena.Alexander Edler had a goal and an assist and David Booth also scored for the Canucks, who had dropped four of five coming in. Cory Schneider turned away 32 shots in the win.
Vancouver has 94 points on the season and sits comfortably in the second spot in the Western Conference.
"It wasn't the prettiest game, but we responded to a few goals and kept pushing the lead and were able to hang on there at the end," Schneider said. "There are no easy games in this league, they played with a lot of passion and energy and it was a tough win for us tonight."
Jack Johnson had a goal and an assist while James Wisniewski and Vinny Prospal each scored for the Blue Jackets, who have dropped their past four games. Steve Mason gave up all four goals on 38 shots.
The first goal of the game belonged to the Blue Jackets as Prospal fired a shot on net from the slot on a rush and it trickled between the pads of Luongo 7:55 in.
The Canucks scored with 3:44 left in the first to tie the game as a right circle faceoff win was drawn back to Chris Higgins, who fired a shot on net that saw Booth fire in the rebound.
Just over a minute later, Vancouver took a 2-1 lead as the Sedin brothers hooked up with Henrik firing a pass from the left to the right where Daniel wristed it home.
It was a 3-1 game 12:38 into the second when Edler went coast-to-coast and blew by all the defenders before flipping the puck between the pads of Mason for a power-play score.
Johnson scored with four minutes to play in the second on a slap shot to make it a one-goal contest after two periods.
The Canucks gave themselves some insurance with 4:41 to play on the man advantage when a slap pass from Henrik at the right point saw Daniel redirect it on net and sneak in his own rebound.
The goal was needed as Wisniewski scored on a one-timer from the high slot with traffic in front and 3:36 showing on the clock.
Crawford made the lead stand in the final moments on a nice save from a Mark Letestu shot down low right before time expired.
"We had some mental mistakes against a good team, they'll make you pay," Blue Jackets interim head coach Todd Richards said. "If we want to win games, the effort is there, we just have to play a smarter game."
