Jones lifts Avs over Flames in OT

Mar 21, 2012 - 4:12 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - David Jones scored with 1:09 left in overtime as Colorado continued its playoff push with a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

Matt Hunwick skated the puck in down the left wing and dished it over to Paul Stastny, who got to the net and put on a shot on Miikka Kiprusoff. The save was made, but Jones was there to stuff in the rebound.

Stastny also scored in regulation while Semyon Varlamov made 31 stops for the Avalanche, who have won five of six to move into the seventh spot in the Western Conference.

"This was a huge win four us," said Jones. "Stastny made a nice play to the net and we got a bounce. I didn't even see it, but that doesn't matter in the end."

Matt Stajan scored the lone goal while Kiprusoff stopped 31 shots for the Flames, who have dropped three straight and with 82 points are two points back of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"We played well but we missed some opportunities," said Calgary forward Alex Tanguay. "Right now we wish a few more of them would go in. We're doing okay, not all the teams are going to go undefeated the rest of the way. It's a setback, but we have a game in hand still and this is a game that could have went either way."

Calgary scored just 1:47 in when Stajan was able to work the puck to the front from the right boards and was able to sneak the puck in.

Colorado scored at the 9:05 mark of the first when Shane O'Brien blasted a shot from the left point that Stastny was able to tip in from in front.

That was it for the goals in regulation as Kiprusoff made 17 stops in the second and third and Varlamov made 22 saves.
