Leafs nip Devils in SO

Mar 24, 2012 - 4:02 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Nazem Kadri scored in the third round of the shootout, lifting the Toronto Maple Leafs over the New Jersey Devils, 4-3.

Kadri, Tyler Bozak and David Steckel all scored in regulation for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a two-game skid. James Reimer made 43 stops.

"Well, as always when you go on the road and get outshot like we did tonight, he [Reimer] stood tall in the net for us, gave us a chance...they came with their push in the third period and our guy made some big stops," Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said.

Jacob Josefson, Zach Parise and Adam Henrique lit the lamp for the Devils, who sit sixth in the Eastern Conference with 90 points. They trail the idle Flyers by four points for the fifth spot.

Martin Brodeur stopped 14-of-17 shots in the loss.

Trailing by two, 3-1, the Devils scored twice late in the third period to tie the game. First, Bryce Salvador's shot from the left point was stuffed in by Parise in front at the 10:57 mark.

Henrique deflected Andy Greene's shot from the left point to make it a 3-3 game with 4:42 left in regulation.

Reimer made four saves in overtime to send the contest into a shootout.

The first four shooters found the back of the net. Patrik Elias was stopped by Reimer to begin the third round. Kadri then pretended like he was going to his backhand before sliding the puck past Brodeur for the game winner.

"He [Kadri] came so close to me and turned on a dime and went right around me," Brodeur said. "You've got to give him credit."

Bozak broke a scoreless tie at the 13:47 mark of the second period. Luke Schenn's blast from the right point ended up on Bozak's stick after hitting off Henrique. Bozak beat Brodeur from the bottom of the right circle to make it 1-0.

Just 69 seconds later, Kadri deflected Jake Gardiner's slap shot from the top of the right circle past Brodeur for a 2-0 lead.

Josefson made it 2-1 with 1:03 remaining. Alexei Ponikarovsky carried the puck down the right wing and his drop pass found Josefson in front. Josefson capped the play by chipping the puck into the back of the net.

Toronto went back up by two at the 9:25 mark of the third as Steckel found a loose puck in front and put it past Brodeur.

Game Notes

New Jersey and Toronto split four games this season, with each team winning twice on enemy ice...Toronto is eight points out of the East's final playoff spot with just seven games left...Toronto forwards Clarke MacArthur (upper body) and Matt Frattin (ankle) missed the game...Maple Leafs forward Ryan Hamilton had an assist in his NHL debut.
