Canucks win Presidents' Trophy

Apr 8, 2012 - 7:14 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo needed to make just 17 saves to record his fifth shutout of the season and the Vancouver Canucks captured their second consecutive Presidents' Trophy with a 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Canucks needed just one point to clinch after the New York Rangers lost to Washington on Saturday.

Henrik Sedin, Samuel Pahlsson and David Booth scored for Vancouver (51-22-9), which finished the season on a roll, winning eight of its final nine games.

As the Western Conference's No. 1 seed, the Canucks will face the Los Angeles Kings when the first round of the playoffs gets underway next week.

"Now the fun starts," said Sedin. "It's the exciting part of the season and something we have all been waiting for."

Devan Dubnyk gave up all three tallies on 42 shots in defeat for the Oilers (32-40-10), who closed the season on a three-game skid.

After a scoreless first period, the Canucks struck on the power play at 15:47 of the second stanza.

Holding the puck at the right point, Alexander Edler fired a hard slap shot on goal that was stopped by Dubnyk, but the rebound came right to the stick of Sedin in front, and he chipped it home to give the Canucks the lead.

It was 2-0 Vancouver 3:14 into the final stanza when Pahlsson got a perfect feed in the slot from Jannik Hansen and one-timed it past a screened Dubnyk.

Booth capped the scoring at 10:36 of the third frame with an outstanding individual effort on the man advantage.

He corralled a drop-pass from Kevin Bieksa in the neutral zone and gained the blue line with speed on the left wing. He turned Oilers' defenseman Jeff Petry inside out on his way to the net and beat Dubnyk to the blocker side.

"It's tough. They came out real hard and we expected that," said Dubnyk. "They are obviously a good team. That have got a lot of points for a reason."

Luongo turned aside five shots in the first and second stanzas, then stopped seven offerings in the final period to keep the youthful Oilers off the scoreboard.

Game Notes

It was Sedin's first goal at home since December 19th against the Minnesota Wild...It was Luongo's 60th career shutout...Vancouver finished 2- for-7 on the power play, while the Oilers failed to score with two man- advantage chances.
