Sens nip Rangers in OT, tie series
Apr 19, 2012 - 4:07 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Kyle Turris scored 2:42 into overtime as the Ottawa Senators took a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers in Game 4 of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.Jim O'Brien gained the Rangers end down the left wing and cut over before leaving a drop pass for Turris, who skated over to the left circle and snapped a shot over the glove of Henrik Lundqvist and just under the bar in the right corner.
"I knew the defender was going to go down and try to block it so I wanted to get it between his legs," said Turris. "I was more just trying to get it through because they were blocking so many than in trying to place it somewhere."
Coming off Monday's Game 3 loss in which Lundqvist guided the Rangers to a 1-0 victory, the Senators tied this best-of-seven series at two games apiece with Game 5 set for Saturday night in the Big Apple.
Sergei Gonchar posted a goal and an assist while Milan Michalek added a goal for the Senators, who played a second straight game without captain Daniel Alfredsson as he suffered a concussion in Game 2 after he was elbowed in the head by New York's Carl Hagelin. Craig Anderson continued to shine in the series as he stopped 31 shots.
"Our fans help us play about 10 to 20 percent better and give us that energy we need when we are playing flat," said Anderson.
Ryan Callahan and Anton Stralman posted goals for the Rangers, who got 28 stops from Lundqvist in the loss.
"It's frustrating to lose in overtime," said head coach John Tortorella. "But there were some positive things to take from this. We need some more guys to step up and get involved."
The Rangers needed just 49 seconds to get on the board as a turnaround shot from Brad Richards in the slot was stopped, but it went to the right circle and Stralman was there to snap it into the left corner.
It took less than five minutes for New York to double its lead when Callahan slammed the puck in from the left side off a rebound from a Marian Gaborik shot in the slot.
Both goals came on the power play, but the Senators scored twice in the second period to tie the game.
Just 7:04 into the second, Ottawa got on the board. Matt Carkner had the puck at the left circle and dished it to the slot where a flying Michalek took it and lifted a backhand in.
The Sens then tied the game with 2:10 to play in the second on the power play as a slap shot from Gonchar at the right point trickled past Lundqvist with Turris sitting on the doorstep.
Anderson turned aside 11 shots in the third while Lundqvist made nine to send the game to overtime for the second time in the series.
