York's shootout goal gives Islanders first victory

Oct 12, 2006 - 5:27 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders finally got their first win, and they did it the hard way.

Mike York scored in the sixth round of a shootout, giving the Islanders a 5-4 shootout victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

After New York's Viktor Kozlov and Anaheim's Ryan Shannon traded goals early in the shootout, York skated in on Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere, deked to the backhand then went to the forehand and calmly slid the puck between Giguere's legs for the game-winner.

"I had some time to study the goalie and I noticed he was kind of biting on the shots," York said. " I just wanted to fake it and he opened up his five-hole for me."

Samuel Pahlsson scored twice while Chris Pronger and Corey Perry tallied for the Ducks, who outshot the Islanders, 50-24. In their last two games, the Islanders have allowed 90 shots.

York, Trent Hunter, Chris Simon and Alexei Yashin scored in regulation for the Islanders, who went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Ducks went 2-for-6 with the extra skater.

"We came out and dominated the first period and played probably our best period of the year," Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger said. "We had a ton of scoring chances. For whatever reason, we came out in the second and forgot about what we did in the first."

Trailing 4-3, the Islanders forced overtime when Yashin took a pass in the slot from Simon and beat Giguere with just under four minutes to go in the third period.

New York goaltender Mike Dunham, filling in for starter Rick DiPietro, made 46 saves while Giguere finished with 20.

"Hopefully this can get us going," Dunham said. "There's some new feelings with a new coach, new players, and things have to be worked out, but we're just starting. It's a work in progress."

Dunham says he will stay with his relaxed approach.

"I approach everything the same," he said. "I'm very laid back. If I'm playing, I'm playing. If I'm not, I'm not. I used to get uptight before games but it does nothing for you. I'm getting too old to worry about that. I just go out there and have a good time."

York and the rest of the Islanders seemed glad to be going home.

"It's tough to start the season that way," he said of New York's three-game trip. "I think we showed a lot of character, we got better every game. Now we go home for (seven games)."
