Rested Devils face Maple Leafs in home opener
Oct 12, 2006 - 1:02 PM Toronto (2-1-1) at New Jersey (1-1-0) 7:30 pm EDTEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - The New Jersey Devils should be well rested for their home opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.
The Devils face the Maple Leafs after four nights off since their last game, a 3-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Travis Zajac scored the lone New Jersey goal when he tallied midway through the second period.
New Jersey, which was outshot, 31-20, went 1-for-9 on the power play. In two games, the Devils are 2-for-13 with the extra skater.
Toronto enters after a 2-1 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers on Monday. Darcy Tucker and Mats Sundin scored in the shootout for the Leafs, who were blanked in six power-play opportunities. Toronto has struggled with the extra skater, going 3-for-23 this season.
Kyle Wellwood scored Toronto's goal in regulation at 11:17 of the third period.
Toronto goaltender Andrew Raycroft, acquired from the Boston Bruins in the offseason to replace the departed Ed Belfour, stopped 24 shots.
