Canucks' Schneider shuts out Ducks
Jan 26, 2013 - 6:28 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Cory Schneider stopped all 30 shots he faced to earn his fifth career shutout, as the Vancouver Canucks blanked the Anaheim Ducks, 5-0, on Friday at Honda Center."Tonight was a positive step in the right direction," Schneider said. "The guys let me see the puck pretty good. Hats off to our guys for a solid effort. It's a team effort when you get a shutout."
Mason Raymond scored twice, Daniel Sedin added a goal and an assist, and Aaron Volpatti and Zack Kassian registered a goal apiece for the Canucks, who avenged a 7-3 season-opening loss to the Ducks in Vancouver.
"They came into our barn and did a number on us," Raymond remarked. "Tonight we returned the favor. We were able to capitalize on our power play. When we were up 3-0, we never stopped pushing."
Jonas Hiller was charged for all five goals on 34 shots in the setback, Anaheim's first of the season.
"They're pretty good on the power play," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau admitted of the Canucks. "You make a mistake against those guys, they're going to make you pay."
Sedin opened the scoring near the midpoint of the first with Vancouver on a 5- on-3 advantage when his twin brother, Henrik, slid a nice feed from the left side of the net through the slot where Daniel was waiting just below the right circle before one-timing the puck past Hiller for a 1-0 lead at the 9:13 mark.
The Canucks added another power-play tally in the latter stages of the first when Raymond tipped a cross-ice feed from Alexandre Burrows off the right post, but had the hand-eye coordination to knock the puck out of mid-air and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead at the 18:40 mark.
Volpatti added an even-strength goal in the middle stanza before the Canucks added two more in the third to put the game out of reach.
Kassian's power-play goal just 1:18 into the third pushed the margin to four before Raymond capped the scoring with a wrister with just under five minutes remaining.
