Devils visit Bruins aiming to rebound from first loss

Jan 29, 2013 - 4:01 PM (Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils will try to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they visit the Boston Bruins for Tuesday's matchup at TD Garden.

The Devils began the campaign with three straight victories before losing in Montreal on Sunday. New Jersey was able to secure a point in the setback, however, as the game ended on Andrei Markov's power-play goal with 38 seconds remaining in overtime.

New Jersey fought hard for Sunday's point, climbing back from a pair of two- goal deficits to force overtime. However, with 59 seconds left in the extra session, New Jersey defenseman Andy Greene went to the penalty box for holding and Markov and the Habs power play went to work.

Montreal won the ensuing face-off and Rene Bourque fired a one-timer that went wide of the net. The puck caromed off the end boards and Markov chipped it over a prone Martin Brodeur, giving the Canadiens their first home win over New Jersey since March 11, 2008. They had lost eight straight to the Devils at the Bell Centre.

"It's the kind of play that when you have a penalty in overtime we didn't win the face-off and they set up a play, missed the net and it could have gone elsewhere, but it came back to Markov in front of the net," Brodeur said.

Patrik Elias and David Clarkson each registered a goal and two assists for the Devils, who were bidding to start 4-0 for the first time since 1995-96. Brodeur stopped 28 shots in his first loss of the season.

The Bruins enter Tuesday's game having won two straight and they have yet to lose in regulation this season, posting a 4-0-1 record through five games.

Boston notched a 5-3 victory Tuesday at Carolina, as David Krejci provided the game-winning goal with under two minutes remaining at PNC Arena.

Zdeno Chara tallied a goal and two assists, while Nathan Horton and Tyler Seguin each registered a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who have opened a season with points in each of their first five games for the first time since 1990-91. Boston last began a campaign with points in six games in 1970-71.

Anton Khudobin made his first start of the season and turned away 29 shots in the victory.

"We just kept pushing and it came right down to the end," Horton said. "Twenty minutes for a win and that's what happened."

Tuesday's tilt is the first of two straight on home ice for Boston, which is 3-0 at TD Garden this season. The Bruins will also welcome Buffalo on Thursday.

Boston swept four games from the Devils in the 2011-12 regular season and has won eight of nine overall in this series. Jersey has lost four in a row and six of its last nine tests in Beantown.
