Stars edge Avalanche

Feb 5, 2013 - 4:57 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jamie Benn scored twice and added an assist as the Dallas Stars took a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Brenden Morrow scored the other goal while Kari Lehtonen posted 29 saves for the Stars, who had lost five of six coming into the game.

"I felt really good out there tonight," said Benn. "Our line controlled the play a little bit more than it has been. We're just trying to get better each and every game."

P.A. Parenteau and Milan Hejduk each posted a goal for the Avalanche, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Semyon Varlamov gave up all three goals on 26 shots in the loss.

"I thought we had some good chances out there tonight, but the pucks just aren't going in," said Hejduk, who played in his 1,000th game. "It's a little tough to lose these games, especially in such a short season."

Dallas scored just 2:21 into the game when Benn stripped the puck from Matt Hunwick and put it home on a short break for his first of the year.

"I did not see him coming," said Hunwick. "It was such a bang-bang play and everyone was changing. After he got it they had a 3-0 break and it was all them from there."

The Stars made it a 2-0 game at the 11:18 mark of the opening frame. Off a right circle faceoff win, Jaromir Jagr grabbed the puck and threw it on net from the slot and Morrow slammed home the rebound.

Colorado got one back with just 1:48 showing on the first period clock. A shot by Paul Stastny from the left wing was redirected on net by John Mitchell. Lehtonen made the stop, but Hejduk was there to shoot in the rebound for his first of the season.

Skating on the power play, the Avs were able to tie the game as a sharp shot at the right side by Stastny popped into the air and Parenteau was able to whack it in out of the air for his seventh goal of the season at the 11:33 mark.

Dallas, though, took the lead back five minutes later when Derek Roy sent a crisp pass from the left wing to the slot where a wide open Benn snapped a wrist shot that beat Varlamov to the stick side.

Lehtonen made seven saves in the final period and helped kill off a Jagr penalty early in the frame, while Dallas benefited from a pair of Colorado penalties late in the period to hold on for the win.
