Mrazek wins debut as Red Wings pound Blues
Feb 8, 2013 - 4:26 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in his NHL debut and the Detroit Red Wings used a balanced attack to beat the St. Louis Blues, 5-1, on Thursday.Cory Emmerton had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who snapped a two- game skid. Daniel Cleary, Jakub Kindl, Damien Brunner and Valtteri Filppula also lit the lamp.
"I thought we got good minutes out of all of our guys tonight," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said.
Alex Pietrangelo scored the lone goal for the Blues, who have lost three straight. Brian Elliott stopped 24-of-29 shots.
"Our team game is not good right now," Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We're cheating each other and we're cheating the game and we're paying the price for it."
Cleary got Detroit's offense going at the 5:14 mark of the first period. He picked up his own rebound and put one past Elliott.
At the 11:50 mark, Kindl's wrist shot from the point -- his first goal of the season -- beat traffic in front and sailed by Elliott.
Pietrangelo's power-play goal with 4:15 left in the middle stanza cut the gap to 2-1. A shot from the point was blocked in front and the puck ended up on Pietrangelo's stick and he fired the puck into a half-empty net.
But the Red Wings scored a pair of late goals to put the game away. First, Emmerton made a nice move off a Jordin Tootoo rebound at the 17:33 mark.
Brunner lit the lamp with 56 seconds left to make it 4-1. Jonathan Ericsson's shot from the right point caromed off a maze of players in front. Brunner controlled the rebound and beat Elliott with a wrist shot.
Filppula scored at the 13:35 mark of the third period on a breakaway during a 4-on-4 situation to account for the final margin.
