Streaking Stars resume road trip in Calgary

Feb 13, 2013 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars try to push their winning streak to five straight games on Wednesday evening when they resume a three-game road trip in a meeting with the Calgary Flames.

The Stars began a tour of Western Canada with Tuesday night's 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers, who struck first in the opening period before Dallas responded with Brenden Dillon's goal in the second.

A three-goal third period put the game away, with Eric Nystrom sparking the outburst with his first goal of the season. It was also his first in 31 games, while Jaromir Jagr and Ryan Garbutt also lit the lamp in the final frame.

Jagr notched the 669th goal of his career, putting him in sole possession of 10th place on the NHL's all-time list.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 35-of-36 shots in the victory, his fifth in a row. He has a 1.77 goals against average and .940 save percentage in that span.

"Kari's been great," Dillon said of his netminder. "He's been our best player. Night in, night out he's been really great for us."

Dallas picked up its third straight victory on the road and will end its swing on Friday in Vancouver.

The Stars won three of four versus the Flames last season, but have dropped three of their past four in Calgary.

The Flames look to avoid a third straight defeat after being dealt a 2-1 shootout loss by the visiting Minnesota Wild on Monday. Leland Irving made 23 saves, but was bested twice in the shootout.

Jiri Hudler was the only Calgary skater to score in the breakaway session and also scored in regulation as the Flames fell to 3-4-3 on the season.

"It seems that we dominated some parts, they dominated us in some other parts," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "We generated some good scoring chances, but we couldn't get the win."

After making his 10th career start, Irving is slated to continue getting the bulk of work in net after the Flames announced on Tuesday that No. 1 netminder Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to miss another two weeks due to a Grade 2 MCL sprain. The 24-year-old Irving is 1-1-1 with a 2.62 GAA and .900 save percentage in four appearances this season.

"I really like what Leland has done," Calgary general manager Jay Feaster said.

The Flames did add depth to the position by claiming netminder Joey MacDonald off of waivers from Detroit on Monday. MacDonald has appeared in 101 games in his NHL career, but has yet to see action this season due to a back injury.
