Flames host Coyotes at the Saddledome

Feb 24, 2013 - 4:14 PM (Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames will try to post consecutive victories for only the second time this season when they host the Phoenix Coyotes for Sunday's encounter at the Saddledome.

Calgary halted a two-game slide with Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. It was the second portion of a three-game homestand that ends Sunday after beginning Wednesday with a regulation loss to Los Angeles.

Matt Stajan led the way in Saturday's win, scoring both goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie. Stajan notched his second goal of the year at 7:19 of the final stanza and later added an empty-net score to seal the win.

"So happy for Matt Stajan, what a great reward for him, played very well and has probably been one of our most consistent players since the start of the year," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said.

Alex Tanguay scored the other goal while Joey MacDonald made 30 stops for the Flames, who had dropped three of four coming into the game.

The Coyotes, meanwhile, had won two straight before coughing up a two-goal lead in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss at Edmonton.

Phoenix built a 2-0 lead by the middle of the second period, but Jordan Eberle and Teemu Hartikainen each scored a goal to help Edmonton force overtime. After a scoreless extra session, Sam Gagner scored the game-winner for the Oilers in the first round of the shootout.

"It was a disappointing to lose after having a 2-0 lead," Coyotes captain Shane Doan said. "You expect to win at that point and unfortunately we didn't. We had opportunities on the power play and we didn't capitalize on them. We have to be better than that."

Kyle Chipchura and Matthew Lombardi lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who are 4-1-1 over their last six games. Mike Smith stopped 41-of-43 shots in the losing effort.

Saturday's tilt marked the start of a three-game road trip for the Coyotes, who are 2-3-2 as the visiting team this season. The final stop on Phoenix's swing will take place Tuesday evening in Vancouver.

The Coyotes will try to duplicate the results from Monday's 4-0 home win over the Flames when it takes the ice Sunday in Calgary. Smith made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season in that victory, the Coyotes' seventh win in the last nine meetings in this series.

The clubs have split the last six encounters at the Saddledome.
