Hurricanes rally past Isles
Feb 25, 2013 - 4:52 AM Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Bobby Sanguinetti's first career goal proved to be the winner as the Carolina Hurricanes rallied for a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders on Sunday.Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin each posted a goal and an assist while Eric Staal also scored for the Hurricanes, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Cam Ward made 23 saves in the win.
John Tavares and Matt Moulson each posted a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who had won two straight and four of six coming in. Kevin Poulin gave up three goals on 27 shots in the loss.
"We didn't have any emotion at all tonight," said New York head coach Jack Capuano. "You know, we're two points out of a playoff spot and we're acting like we don't need to play hard. It's frustrating because you play so well on the road then you come back here and stink the place up in front of your fans. We all have to do a better job from the coaching staff on down."
Trailing by two goals, the Hurricanes got one on the power play late in the second period. After a left circle faceoff win, Semin's slap shot went off the ankle of an Islander and popped into the air. Eric Staal was at the left side of the net and he was able to whack it out of the air for his ninth of the season with 1:32 left in the frame.
Just 45 seconds later, Carolina tied the game as Jordan Staal's snap shot from the slot went in past the glove of Poulin for a 2-2 game.
"It was nice to get those quick two goals before we went into the third. We felt pretty confident...we could find a way to win," Jordan Staal said.
The Hurricanes then took a 3-2 lead just past the midway mark of the final frame as Patrick Dwyer rushed into the Islanders zone down the left wing before firing a pass over to the right for Sanguinetti, who sent a wrister into the back of the net for his first NHL goal.
Semin put the puck into the net with the goalie pulled in the final minute to seal the win.
New York took a 1-0 lead just 4:38 in as a Brad Boyes skated the puck down low and just before going behind the net he centered it where Moulson one-timed it in.
Skating on a 2-on-1 break, the Islanders took a 2-0 lead as Tavares snapped it into the right corner of the net from the left circle for his 13th goal of the season with 7:35 to play.
