Red Wings edge Sharks in SO

Mar 1, 2013 - 7:36 AM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Damien Brunner scored the winner in the shootout to help the Detroit Red Wings take a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

Brunner was the second shooter for the Red Wings and he beat Antti Niemi clean with a wrister under the glove. Ryane Clowe had the last chance for San Jose and he missed the net with his high shot.

Patrick Eaves scored the only goal while Jonas Gustavsson got his first win of the season thanks to a 25-save performance for the Red Wings, who have won three of their last four.

"I was real excited to play today," Gustavsson said. "You play because you want to win. That's the best feeling you can have. The guys really helped me a lot today. They made it easier for me."

Logan Couture scored the lone goal of the game for the Sharks, who have lost three of four. Niemi had 33 stops in the loss.

"It's the same story every game," Couture admitted. "We have to find a way to score more goals."

The first 40 minutes of this game passed without a goal, but the Sharks made it a 1-0 game 4:49 into the third.

After Detroit was unable to clear, Joe Thornton sent a pass from the slot over to his right where Couture one-timed it home for his eighth of the year.

Detroit, though, tied the game just 1:32 later as Niklas Kronwall's slap shot from the high slot hit off of Eaves, who got credit for his first goal of the season.
