Penguins outlast Habs in OT thriller

Mar 3, 2013 - 3:54 AM Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Brandon Sutter scored 52 seconds into overtime, lifting the Pittsburgh Penguins to a wild 7-6 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre.

On the winning tally, James Neal led a rush into the Montreal zone before dishing to Simon Despres. The Pittsburgh defenseman then passed the puck to a trailing Sutter, who beat Carey Price on the glove side with a wrister from the slot.

Sutter, Chris Kunitz and Matt Cooke each had two goals for Pittsburgh, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby registered a goal and two assists, while Kris Letang collected four helpers.

"The mistakes we made, we didn't let it pressure us. We just kept coming at them," Crosby said.

Brian Gionta lit the lamp twice for the Canadiens, who have earned at least a point in 10 consecutive games (7-0-3).

"It was one of those games, with momentum shifting back and forth a couple of times, but we have to be better than that," said Montreal forward Max Pacioretty.

Tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, the goals came fast and furious in a second period that ended with the clubs even at 4-4.

The Canadiens moved ahead on Pacioretty's seventh goal since Feb. 18, but a tally from Kunitz and Cooke's two goals gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead.

Montreal, however, pulled even with two goals in the final 2:23.

Shortly after a Montreal power play expired, Gionta scored on a deflection from between the circles. Brendan Gallagher then circled the net and found P.K. Subban for a tap-in with less than a second remaining.

David Desharnais beat Tomas Vokoun to put the Canadiens up 5-4 at the 5:25 mark of the third period, but Kunitz tied things up with one-timer from the top of the slot at 8:33.

Pittsburgh retook the lead as Crosby pounced on a loose puck after coming off the bench at 10:24. Gionta netted the equalizer 30 seconds later.

"I don't want to remember ever being in a game like this again," said Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma.

Brandon Prust and Sutter traded goals in the first period.
