Sullivan's SO score lifts Coyotes over Ducks
Mar 3, 2013 - 7:14 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Steve Sullivan tied the game in the third period and then scored the lone shootout goal, as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the visiting Anaheim Ducks, 5-4, in the first of three meetings in five days. The Coyotes pulled even on Sullivan's rebound putback with 6:29 left in regulation, and the veteran forward beat Anaheim goaltender Viktor Fasth again in the penalty-shot tiebreaker, firing a wrister between his pads.
Mike Smith assured the extra point for Phoenix by kicking out Saku Koivu's backhand bid with his left pad.
"(Smitty) made some timely saves," Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said. "No goalie likes to give up four goals. But if you look at the saves he made, he kept them off the board on their early power play."
Lauri Korpikoski scored twice for the Coyotes, who will also host the Ducks on Monday before the teams shift to Anaheim on Wednesday.
The Ducks' Andrew Cogliano registered his second career hat trick - his first also came in Phoenix on Jan. 31, 2012 - and drew a holding penalty with 1:58 remaining in overtime. Anaheim mustered only two shots on the power play.
"I just got in the right spots, and I don't think Smith was ready for them," Cogliano said of his goals.
With the Coyotes down 3-2, Korpikoski tied things up 15 seconds into the third period.
Koivu put Anaheim back on top with a power-play goal at the 6:25 mark. The veteran forward took a pass from Bobby Ryan and beat Smith through the five- hole.
Cogliano opened the scoring 21 seconds into the contest, but the Coyotes responded on Matthew Lombardi's 99th career goal just past the midway part of the first period.
Korpikoski beat Fasth on the glove side with a wrister from the top of the left circle, giving Phoenix a 2-1 lead at 12:32 of the middle stanza.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Cogliano lit the lamp 27 seconds later. He then completed the hat trick as Daniel Winnik fed him for a quick shot from the bottom of the left circle with 2:34 remaining in the second period.
Game Notes
Smith stopped 31 shots ... Fasth made 33 saves ... Anaheim was 1-for-3 on the man advantage, while Phoenix had no power-play opportunities... The Ducks were called for one penalty, a coincidental roughing minor on Koivu.
