Devils snap skid with SO win over Sabres
Mar 8, 2013 - 5:11 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Patrik Elias tied the game late in regulation and scored in the shootout, as the New Jersey Devils snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Buffalo Sabres at Prudential Center.Brian Flynn's first NHL goal gave the Sabres a 2-0 lead midway through the third period.
New Jersey fought back, however, and pulled even just as goaltender Johan Hedberg went to the bench for an extra skater. Buffalo's Jhonas Enroth kicked out David Clarkson's long shot, but Elias buried the rebound with 1:06 remaining.
Enroth, making his first start since Feb. 5, was injured on the tying goal.
Ryan Miller took over between the pipes and Clarkson beat him with a backhander to begin the second round of the shootout. After Buffalo captain Jason Pominville missed the net, Elias sealed it with a great deke to the forehand.
Hedberg made 23 saves to end a personal 0-6-1 stretch.
Enroth had 27 saves before muscle cramps forced his departure.
The Sabres are 0-1-2 since topping New Jersey in a shootout last Saturday.
"I like the way our team's competing right now," Sabres interim head coach Ron Rolston said. "If we continue to do that we're going to win hockey games."
Buffalo got on the board via the power play in the second period. Tyler Ennis emerged from a board battle with possession of the puck and fed Thomas Vanek for a one-timer in the slot at the 7:56 mark.
The Sabres seemed to be on their way to collecting two points when Flynn lit the lamp at 9:56 of the third.
However, moments after the tally, Buffalo defenseman Christian Ehrhoff went to the penalty box for holding. The Devils struck on the subsequent power play, as Adam Henrique retrieved the puck after his initial shot was blocked and beat Enroth glove side with 6:30 left.
"The guys kept battling. We didn't panic," Henrique said.
