Howard, Red Wings blank Oilers

Mar 8, 2013 - 6:23 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Jimmy Howard made 22 saves for his second shutout of the season, and the Detroit Red Wings continued their home dominance over the Edmonton Oilers with a 3-0 victory.

Jakub Kindl and Cory Emmerton each scored in the second period for the Red Wings, who improved to 5-1-1 since Feb. 23.

Devan Dubnyk stopped 25 shots for Edmonton, which has now lost seven straight at Joe Louis Arena. The Oilers fell to 1-3-2 on their nine-game road trip as well.

Kindl lit the lamp 3:16 into the middle stanza for the game's first goal. An Oiler tried to tie up Kindl, but the Red Wings defenseman was able to put a soft shot on net that squeaked through Dubnyk's pads and trickled across the goal line.

Emmerton came off the bench to take Drew Miller's pass from the boards and beat Dubnyk from between the circles with 7:41 remaining in the frame for a 2-0 lead.

"We can't stop playing for 10 minutes against the Detroit Red Wings and expect to get points," Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger said.

Justin Abdelkader added an empty-netter with 1:10 remaining in the third period.

"It was a pretty complete game for us," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said. "It was a good win."
