Kings down Flames, sweep season series
Mar 12, 2013 - 5:15 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Dustin Brown potted a pair of goals, as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Calgary Flames for the second time in three days with a 3-1 decision on Monday at Staples Center.Jarret Stoll scored once and Jake Muzzin added a pair of assists to help the Kings sweep the season series from the Flames for the first time since the 1999-00 season.
Jonathan Quick stopped 23-of-24 shots for the Kings, who wrapped up a five- game homestand at 4-1.
Mikael Backlund scored the lone Calgary goal, while Joey MacDonald allowed two goals on 21 shots for the Flames, who have lost three in a row.
"We're not winning games," Calgary captain Jarome Iginla admitted. "We're in last place and that's not acceptable."
LA took advantage of an early power play to notch the game's first goal, as Slava Voynov slid a pass from the top of the right circle to the low left side, where Brown was waiting all alone to pound the puck into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 5:39 mark.
The Kings doubled their advantage just over four minutes later when Stoll rifled a wrister from the slot that sailed high over MacDonald to make it 2-0 at the 9:40 mark.
After a scoreless second stanza, Calgary had a prime opportunity to cut into LA's lead with a short 5-on-3 power play early in the third, but Quick was able to make a number of big stops, including a sliding glove save, to keep the Flames off the board.
Calgary finally broke through late in the third when Backlund skated into the right circle and danced past a defender before slipping a quick shot through the five-hole of Quick to make it 2-1 at the 14:38 mark.
"That early power play goal sparked us," Brown said. "They pushed us in the third period, but we weathered the storm with big saves by Quick."
The Flames opted for the extra attacker late in regulation and got a couple of good chances, but Brown buried an empty netter with 26.4 seconds left to end Calgary's comeback bid.
