Third-period surge carries Jets past Bruins
Mar 20, 2013 - 5:47 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane scored in a 57- second span late in the third period, helping Winnipeg overcome Boston by a 3-1 count at MTS Centre.Wheeler added an empty-net score and Ondrej Pavelec made 27 saves for the Jets, who have won six of their last eight games and moved two points ahead of Carolina for the Southeast Division lead.
"It's nice to get the two points. We're just trying to push up the standings as far as we can go," Jets forward Andrew Ladd said.
Brad Marchand tallied and Tuukka Rask stopped 22 shots for the Bruins, who have lost two in a row and three of five.
Pavelec kept it a one-goal game when he stretched across the crease to make a left-pad stop on Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara, and the luck took a little bit longer to properly find the hosts.
Wheeler tipped in a Zach Bogosian shot on a power play to even the score with 8:16 to play, and Rask was slow to react as Kane shoveled home the go-ahead score off a Grant Clitsome rebound under a minute later.
Only seven seconds remained when Wheeler slid a puck into the empty cage.
"It's becoming a habit. It's not acceptable," Bruins forward Shawn Thornton said. "We should be pissed off in here."
The Bruins got on the board after only eight seconds elapsed in the second period. Bogosian mishandled a clearing attempt deep in his own zone, and the puck bounced off the bottom-left side of the net and right to Marchand for the easy score.
