Panthers continue road trip with stop on Long Island
Mar 24, 2013 - 3:03 PM (Sports Network) - The Florida Panthers will try to bounce back from their first loss on a five-game road trip, as they visit the New York Islanders for Sunday's test at Nassau Coliseum.Florida began the swing with wins at Carolina and the New York Rangers, giving the Panthers just their second two-game win streak of the season. However, the Panthers were on the wrong end of Saturday's 2-1 decision in New Jersey and lost for the seventh time in nine games.
David Clarkson's second-period marker proved to be the difference for the Devils, while Peter Mueller netted the lone Florida goal. Former New Jersey goaltender Scott Clemmensen gave up both goals on 25 shots for the Panthers, who are last in the NHL with 24 points.
"It's tough to win on the road," Clemmensen admitted. "We played a pretty good hockey game, but it was tough to lose."
Florida is 5-9-1 on the road and will complete the trek Tuesday in Toronto.
The Islanders, meanwhile, have lost three straight games -- all in regulation -- and are three points out of a playoff spot in the East.
New York's latest setback came Friday against Pittsburgh and the 4-2 loss dropped the Isles to 0-3-0 on their four-game homestand. Jack Capuano's club has not fared well on home ice this season, going 5-11-2 at the Coliseum compared to a solid 8-4-1 record everywhere else.
The Isles were tied 2-2 with Pittsburgh after 40 minutes, but Brandon Sutter scored the winner early in the third period to help lift the Pens to an 11th straight victory.
Mark Streit and Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders, while Evgeni Nabokov gave up three goals on 24 shots.
"This was a tough one because I thought we really played one of our best hockey games," said Capuano. "That's a good hockey team over there and we hung with them the whole time. One little mistake and it cost us the game."
The Islanders will begin a four-game road trip when they visit Washington on Tuesday.
New York has won the last two meetings against the Panthers and notched a 4-3 regulation decision when the clubs met on March 16 in Sunrise. Florida has taken two in a row and three of the last four encounters at the Coliseum.
