Hurricanes snap skid with win over Bruins
Apr 14, 2013 - 3:38 AM Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Joe Corvo put in the go-ahead goal on the power play midway through the third period and Jiri Tlusty scored twice in Carolina's 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins.Justin Peters stopped 28 shots and Jeff Skinner had the other goal for Carolina, which snapped a seven-game losing streak. The Hurricanes had lost eight straight at home. It was just their second win in the last 16 games overall.
The Hurricanes lost the Bruins, 6-2, on Monday in Boston.
"There was so much motivation here tonight. I wanted to give a better effort for the guys," Peters said. "They've been working so hard so it was great for them to get rewarded."
Milan Lucic and Tyler Seguin had the goals for the Bruins, who have lost back- to-back games and were denied clinching a playoff spot. Tuukka Rask made 34 saves.
"We should have played a little tougher and been a little smarter," Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg said. "We took some penalties and they used them to their advantage and we didn't. In the end, that was the difference."
The Hurricanes capitalized on Chris Kelly's kneeing penalty to take the lead at 9:36 of the third period. Marc-Andre Bergeron passed the puck from the right side to the top of the left circle for Corvo's successful rising one- timer.
Peters stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third period and Tlusty iced the win with an empty-net tally in the final 30 seconds.
Lucic scored 6:07 into the game on a deflection in front.
The Hurricanes tied the game with 36 seconds left in the opening period. Skinner netted the power-play tally. Alexander Semin's shot from the left circle was stopped by Rask, but Skinner was alone on the left side of the net for the rebound putback.
Peters stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced in the second period, including a great save on Jaromir Jagr at the midway point. Jagr was along on the right side of the net, but was turned away when Peters dove to make a spectacular glove save.
Tlusty's 18th goal of the year gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 edge with 5:56 left in the second. Eric Staal's pass from behind the net went to Tlusty, who beat Rask high to the blocker side.
Seguin went top shelf on a breakaway with 2:03 remaining in the second to square the contest at 2-2.
Game Notes
