Sens down Caps, win fourth straight
Apr 19, 2013 - 4:35 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Cory Conacher scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Craig Anderson made 18 saves as the Ottawa Senators ended the Washington Capitals' eight-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory at Scotiabank Place.Kyle Turris scored twice for the Senators, who are currently the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race after winning four straight on the heels of a five-game slide.
"It always feels good to score, especially when you haven't got one in a while," said Turris. "This one felt real good because this was a big win against a team we might be facing in the playoffs."
Braden Holtby was much busier in net than Anderson and stopped 35 shots, but his turnover led to Conacher's tally and Washington's first regulation loss since March 26 against the Islanders.
Mike Ribeiro lit the lamp for the Capitals, who still lead the Southeast Division with four games remaining.
"For whatever reason we were flat tonight," said Ribeiro. "We put together a few good shifts, but we weren't able to get any momentum going."
Turris broke a scoreless tie 1:15 into the second period with a wrister from the right circle, but Ribeiro tied it with 8:46 remaining in the middle stanza on a tap-in at the right doorstep.
Holtby's mistake came shortly thereafter, as his pass from behind the net was out of defenseman Karl Alzner's reach. Conacher came skating into the zone on a line change, stole the errant feed and shot it into the unoccupied net with 6:34 to play in the period.
Turris' empty-netter with 1:27 remaining sealed the outcome.
