Ducks shoot for division title in 2nd straight game in Edmonton

Apr 22, 2013 - 2:36 PM (Sports Network) - The Anaheim Ducks try on Monday to clinch their first Pacific Division title in six years as they visit the Edmonton Oilers for the second straight night.

Following a 3-1 victory last night, their 10th straight in Edmonton, the Ducks lead the Los Angeles Kings by five points for first place in the division with three games left for both clubs. The Kings are idle tonight, so with a victory the Ducks can lock up their first Pacific crown since 2006-07, when they won their only Stanley Cup championship.

Anaheim snapped a four-game slide with Sunday's win, getting goals from Corey Perry, Cam Fowler and Kyle Palmieri. Jonas Hiller added 27 saves.

"It's great to have a win again after what has been happening for the last little while," said Hiller. "We knew that we needed to play better, but sometimes it is not that easy. Tonight I think that everybody worked a little harder and that made the difference."

The Oilers, meanwhile, found themselves mathematically eliminated from the playoff race on Sunday, meaning they will miss the postseason for a seventh straight season.

Edmonton has not played a postseason game since a Game 7 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals.

"To have another season out of the playoffs, to have another season where we're playing meaningless games at the end of the year, is very frustrating and something we're not proud of," said a disappointed Taylor Hall.

Hall scored the lone goal for the Oilers in Sunday's game just one minute into the contest before the Ducks got the equalizer from Fowler with just two seconds left in the frame.

Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves in defeat.

The Oilers played without forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who will miss the final week of the regular season due to a shoulder injury that will likely require surgery.

The first overall pick of the 2011 draft, the 20-year-old had just four goals and 24 points in 40 games this season after notching 18 goals and 52 points in 62 contests as a rookie last season.

The Ducks, who took the first of three meetings between these clubs 2-1 at home on April 8, have won three straight and 13 of the last 15 overall in this series. They have not lost in Edmonton since Nov. 30, 2007.
