Predators edge Flames to halt skid
Apr 24, 2013 - 5:19 AM Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Matt Halischuk and Austin Watson both tallied in the third period to lead the Nashville Predators to a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.Nick Spaling and David Legwand also lit the lamp for the Predators, who had dropped eight straight entering the contest. Pekka Rinne turned aside 15-of-18 shots in the win.
"The guys have been working hard and they are not getting rewarded," said Nashville head coach Barry Trotz. Tonight it was good to get rewarded."
Roman Cervenka had a pair of goals and T.J. Brodie also scored for the Flames, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 28 shots in the loss.
"It was a close game, but they were the better team," said Kiprusoff.
Brodie started things off with a goal after beating Rinne with a snap shot from the right circle. Paul Byron found Brodie with a pass from behind the net. Brodie used a shot fake to slip a defender before firing his second goal of the season into the back of the net.
Legwand cleaned up a Shea Weber miss with 5:21 remaining in the opening frame to tie things up.
Cervenka scored his first goal on a a breakaway 7:06 into the middle session.
Spaling was able to tie the game with 1:29 remaining in the second after tipping in a Weber shot from the slot.
Watson and Halischuk scored 1:23 apart to put the Predators ahead 4-2. Craig Smith dropped the disc back to Watson on a 3-2 rush, and Watson ripped a slapper into the back of the net.
Bobby Butler intercepted a sloppy pass in the Flames zone and slid it to Halischuk on the goal line. Halischuk skated in front of the net and got Kiprusoff to drop to the ice before firing it top shelf for his fifth tally of the season.
Cervenka added his second goal with just under five minutes remaining to account for the final difference.
Game Notes
Nashville won the season-series 2-1 ... The Predators have won five of the last seven matchups ... Nashville will visit the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday before closing the season at Columbus on Saturday ... The Flames will travel to St. Louis on Thursday before closing their season on Friday at Chicago.
