Flames complete season with loss at Chicago
Apr 27, 2013 - 5:30 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews scored one goal apiece and the Chicago Blackhawks held off the Calgary Flames for a 3-1 win on Friday.Marcus Kruger added a goal and Corey Crawford made 25 saves for the Blackhawks, who have clinched the Presidents' Trophy and home-ice advantage as long as they last in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"We're just playing the moment. We haven't gotten ahead of ourselves all year, and now is not the time to do so," Crawford said. "We feel good right now and we're just focused on the task at hand."
Chris Butler had the lone tally for the Flames (19-25-4), who closed the season with three consecutive losses. Joey MacDonald had 35 saves in the setback.
Kane and Toews scored 3:28 apart in the first period to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 edge.
Kane took a pass from Patrick Sharp in the left circle and quickly deposited a wrister into the back of the net with 10:26 remaining in the frame. On the second goal, Brandon Saad's shot was turned away by MacDonald, but the rebound bounced right to Toews in front of the net for his 23rd tally this season.
Butler scored a shorthanded goal with 9:17 left in the middle session to get the Flames on the board. Lee Stempniak found Butler with a pass from the corner, and the defenseman blasted a slap shot past Crawford from 55 feet out for his first goal of the season.
"The first period was not pretty, that's for sure. They really showed us what they were capable of early," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. "We added that short-handed goal and came to life. Everyone seemed to skate better."
Kruger corralled a loose puck in the Calgary zone and fired a wrister past MacDonald 7:06 into the third period to make it 3-1.
