Broduer closes in another milestone when Devils face Rangers

Oct 16, 2006 - 2:26 PM New Jersey (3-1-0) at NY Rangers (2-3-0) 7:00 pm EDT

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- When the New Jersey Devils have needed a player to come up with a big performance at the right time, Martin Brodeur usually has gotten the job done.

Brodeur attempts to become the third goaltender to record 450 victories when the Devils try to win for the fourth time in five outings Monday against the New York Rangers.

A two-time Vezina Trophy winner, Brodeur has been in goal for all three of New Jersey's Stanley Cup titles. He has already passed Hall of Famer Terry Sawchuck for third place on the all-time victories list and is eight away from tying Florida's Ed Belfour for second.

After leading the team with 48 goals last season, Brian Gionta followed Thursday's hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs with the tie-breaking tally in the third period of Saturday's 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Rangers opened the season with two victories before dropping their last three contests, including Saturday's 7-4 defeat to the unbeaten Buffalo Sabres.

Brendan Shanahan scored a pair of goals and Jaromir Jagr and Michael Nylander added two assists each for New York, which has given up 17 tallies during the skid.

After the teams split their eight regular-season encounters, the Devils outscored the Rangers, 17-4, in a four-game sweep of their playoff showdown in April.
