Flames edge Blue Jackets
Oct 5, 2013 - 2:01 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jiri Hudler and Curtis Glencross scored two third-period goals to help lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Two goals separated by 42 seconds propelled the Flames to their first win of the season. Hudler drilled a shot high over the glove of Bobrovsky from the left faceoff circle, while Glencross added a quick goal of his own on a pass from David Jones across the goal crease to give the Flames a 4-2 edge.
Joey MacDonald stopped 29-of-32 shots in between the pipes, while T.J. Galiardi added a goal and assist in the triumph.
Marion Gaborik and Jack Johnson both tallied a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets, who lost their season opener. Reigning Vezina trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky allowed four goals on 30 shots.
Rookie Sean Monahan scored in his first NHL game to open up the scoring not even three minutes into the first. Lee Stempniak fired a wrist shot off Bobrovsky, and Monahan, the sixth overall pick of this past year's NHL Draft, was in front to bury home the rebound.
Boone Jenner drew an interference penalty on Shane O'Brien to set up a Columbus power play. The Blue Jackets capitalized on the man advantage when Gaborik sent a sharp pass across the ice to find a wide-open Johnson to tie the game three minutes later.
Galiardi took advantage of a Columbus turnover at the blue line by racing down the ice to lift a backhand shot over the glove of Bobrovsky for his first goal as a Flame.
Columbus tied the game yet again. Gaborik scored his first of the season, guiding a Brandon Dubinsky shot out of the air and into the back of the net.
Both teams tightened up their defense in the ensuing period.
Artem Anisimov brought the Jackets back within one with a little less than five minutes to go in the third. He retrieved the puck from behind the net and used his reach to stuff the puck past MacDonald.
The Blue Jackets pulled the goalie with 1:22 left in the game and 13 seconds later, Johnson took an interference penalty to put the game out of reach.
