Avs top Predators

Oct 5, 2013 - 4:06 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - P.A. Parenteau scored a pair of goals as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Nashville Predators, 3-1, at Pepsi Center.

Patrick Bordeleau added a goal and No. 1 overall pick Nate MacKinnon added an assist, his third of the season, for the Avalanche, who improved to 2-0 on the young season.

"I thought we played a strong 60 minutes tonight," said Parenteau. "Our defense had a few lapses, but we were able to stay in. It always seems our games with Nashville are low-scoring defensive battles."

Seymon Varlamov turned away 25 shots in the victory.

Paul Gaustad had the lone tally for the Predators, who have dropped two straight to open the year.

Parenteau scored with 1:10 left in the opening period.

Jamie McGinn fired a shot off Pekka Rinne and Parenteau pounded home the rebound for a 1-0 edge. Bordeleau lit the lamp just under eight minutes into the second period. Nate Guenin fired a slap shot from the blue line and Bordeleau redirected it in front of the net and off the crossbar for the goal.

"It was a broken play. It just seemed like the puck just floated in air and no one knew where it would go," said Predators rookie defenseman Seth Jones. "Parenteau got the inside spot and was able to tap it in."

Gaustad cut the Nashville deficit in half with his tally at the 14:10 mark of the second. Mike Fisher skated along the left boards and centered a pass and Gaustad backhanded it home.

Parenteau added an open net goal in the closing seconds of the contest to account for the final margin.
